Veni, Vidi, Vici: A Cautionary Tale at the C.I.A.

At the C.I.A. (Central Intelligence Agency) at Langley, Virginia, USA there is a certain policy and process of how they select their agents. Unfortunately, this is what happened on one particular day. It’s been a secret for some time for the uninitiated. But, here goes:

The process usually comes down to three possible agents, normally two males and one female. Do not ask me why it’s like this I did not invent the process?

Anyhow, the three agents were told separately what will happen next. Each possible agent was told to go into this room where they will find an envelope with their instructions to follow.

Now, as the first male goes into the room where there is only a desk with an envelope and a gun, he opens the envelope and reads the instructions. You have only one bullet in the gun. He is told to go into the next room and shoot his wife there waiting for him. Unbeknown to the agents the bullets are blanks. As he enters the next room he sees his wife sitting there but he cannot shoot her even though he has been trained to follow orders. He fails the test.

The next male follows suit and again is given the same instructions, but he also cannot shoot his wife even after much deliberation. He also fails the test.

Finally, the female goes into the first room and sees the envelope and the gun and is told to shoot her husband in the next room. After a few moments the sound of a gunshot is heard and then several loud banging noises. The examiners outside the room rush into the room, where they see the husband lying dead on the floor, the female retorts, “the bullet didn’t kill him so I killed him with the chair.” She got the job.
